I drove through to Edinburgh to meet Scott (another volunteer) to take home a young pup to be fostered. We try wherever possible to foster the very young or the older dogs rather than put them into kennels. His name was Keifer and he was 6 months old. When I met Scott it was already dark and I could barely see this little boy I was taking home. He was lovely and friendly and though he had to be lifted, went into the car with no fuss. As I was driving I could smell that aroma that was unmistakable as a kennel smell, which I thought strange as he was taken from a family home. I got home and brought him inside and introduced him to our dogs. That is when I got my first good look at him. Poor wee boy. He had very little fur on his face and back, he was very thin with no muscle tone. He found it difficult to walk properly and I noticed his pads were very red and sore. A trip to the vet the next day confirmed he had mange and the pads on his feet were burned, probably from urine. His muscles were wasting from not being exercised. Also he wasnt housetrained, which further convinced me this boy had been kept in a kennel Although he was very friendly, he was nervous of everything including his own reflection. He wasnt scared, he just had no experience of things we take for granted, like a light switching on, or the television - all these everyday things sent him running, then he would come back to investigate and give the offending item a thorough barking at. A lovely couple were homechecked and seemed the ideal Mum and Dad for this special boy. They had two beautiful GSDs and felt they could offer a great home to another. They all came to meet Keifer and they got on really well. Keifer went to his new home a few days later and I was delighted for him that after such a poor start he would be loved and cared for, for the rest of his life. Some weeks ago I received a lovely letter and some pictures and I confess to shedding a tear or two to see how wonderful he looked. "Dear Aunty Carol, Just to say Thank You for finding me a happy home with plenty of love. Please find enclosed a few photographs of myself with my brother Chinook and my sister Meisha. Look how well behaved I am. Mum says Im the cheekiest boy she has ever seen but she loves me really. I have only destroyed a few items like the hall stairs and mums good shoes, Well thats the joy of having dogs mum says. I have to go now to see what else I can get up to. Lots of love always Keifer xxx " |
